M-85 FAMILY ENGINES Further development of the national aviation has necessitated the building of more powerful engines. The implementation of this requirement began in 1935 by the launched license- production of 14-cylinder double-row star 14K engine of Gnome-Ron company later designated M-85. The takeoff power of this engine was 850 hp. The M-85 engine became the baseline model for creation of the whole family of high-efficiency engines. The M-86 and M-87 engines featuring power of 950 hp were among them. The engines were used to power the DB-3 torpedo-carrying planes, ANT-44D maritime bombers and GST flying boat. In 1939-1940 the M-88 engine with considerably increased power (1100 hp) was built for the long-range bombers, high-speed agile fighters and effective attack planes. The engine and its modification were used to power the Il-4 (DB-3F), DB-3F, ANT-51, Su-2 and I-180 planes.
